121 Mortimer Road

Adjaye Associates, Sue Webster

2019

A unassumingly normal detached house, now steeped in history and intrigue.

Once home to the ‘Mole Man’ of Hackney who tunneled under his home until he caused the collapse of nearby roads running past his house, the premises is now home to the renowned artist Sue Webster.

Rather than tearing it down and starting again, Sue wanted to keep the existing structure and paired with David Adjaye’s love for exposed concrete, produces this very industrial & raw dwelling.

HLD aided throughout the project, designing and engineering the bespoke joinery and furniture as well as the concrete staircase that runs down one side of the building.

HLD also designed and produced all of the exterior metal and timber fencing on the property.
